Forensic medicine, the fusion of law and medical knowledge

Forensic medicine deals with the application of medical knowledge to law by contributing to the elaboration, interpretation and application of legal precepts concerning the protection of life and psycho-physical integrity.

At the Quisisana accredited private hospital, it is possible to undergo a forensic medicine visit in Ferrara.

What is a forensic medicine visit

Forensic medicine examinations at Quisisana, which are chargeable and not affiliated with the National Health System, are performed in a facility that makes experience and specialisation its strengths.

The doctor draws up the medical-legal report where he describes the events in an analytical and timely manner from a medical-scientific point of view. In the same document he establishes the extent of the damage, that is, he quantifies the biological damage suffered by the patient. He then determines the nature and duration of the injuries and quantifies the extent of the consequent decrease in the psycho-physical integrity of the person.

Who is forensic medicine for?

There are many cases in which the preparation of the medical-legal report becomes of absolute importance. Specifically, the cases can be divided into five macro categories:

  • Accident at work - injury due to a fortuitous event, violent and external, which produces traumatic injuries, which occurred in the performance of work, resulting in death or disability (temporary or permanent)
  • Road accident - an event involving vehicles, humans or animals and resulting in injury to people, things or animals
  • Medical liability - when during the administration of a medical service, a medical error (diagnosis or therapy) causes damage to the patient who is the subject of the service
  • Social security matters - to establish a person's right to receive certain social security benefits
  • Autopsy - to determine the causes of death

The coroner analyzes the therapeutic and diagnostic path of each patient from a medical-scientific point of view. It also delves into the traumatic event to understand in detail how to compensate for the moral and financial damage suffered.
